S ince its establishment in 1932, the Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) has played an important role
of championing the manufacturing and manufacturing-related industries in Singapore. Our journey through the manufacturing landscape is de nitely rewarding as we see the sector’s continuous growth to become one of the pillars of Singapore’s economy. With the challenges that the changing economic landscape brings, the SMF has shown resilience and continuously helps companies innovate and transform, as well as keep abreast with the latest technology.
The SMF’s Food and Beverage Industry Group (F&B IG) was one of the  rst industry groups formed and it has represented the food manufacturing industry for decades. Its unique Working in Partnership (WIP) programme has helped introduce many Singapore food products to overseas buyers/supermarket chains/ retailers/importers. Under this programme, companies are able to enjoy economies of scale from shared resources, minimise risks and boost marketing returns from industry- speci c branding like Tasty Singapore. Just this year alone, WIP was involved in three major tradeshows: Food & Hotel Asia (FHA) 2018 in Singapore, SIAL China 2018 in Shanghai, and International Food Exhibition (IFE) 2018 in Guangzhou. In November 2018, they will be participating in yet another major tradeshow, the China International Import Exposition (CIIE) 2018 in Shanghai, bringing with them 23 Singapore food companies to reach out to the international audience.
During FHA 2018, the SMF launched two digital platforms and the SMF SMART app. The digital platforms consolidate participating Singapore food products into a single platform so that overseas retailers/importers get to enjoy a hassle-free, one-stop consolidation of quality
products from a single trusted source. To protect the Singapore brand and prevent consumers from purchasing counterfeit products, the SMF engaged i-Sprint to develop the SMF SMART app to help international audience verify the authenticity of the food products with their phones. This app is available on the app store for free.
Through SMF’s Global Business Group (GBG) and Enterprise Europe Network (EEN), the SMF has helped many Singapore food companies to go international through business-to-business matching. The Singapore Pavilion is organised in major trade exhibitions and business missions to learn about the countries’ economic landscape and culture.
As a federation that believes in the importance of trading and collaborations, the SMF has signed many Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) to help foster partnerships between Singapore and overseas companies. The SMF is always kept abreast on the latest updates on the free trade agreements (FTAs). With our knowledge and expertise in the FTAs, we provide advice to the companies so that they may make full use of the FTAs and trade overseas with ease. To assist companies when they trade overseas, the SMF is one of the trade associations and chambers (TACs) authorised by the Singapore Customs to issue, endorse and certify Certi cates of Origin and other supporting documents. The SMF is proud to have issued many Certi cates of Origin for over 20 years!
The SMF will continue to help companies in the food and other industries to grow and expand. We look forward to welcoming food companies to join our SMF network of members.
