he Singapore Food Manufacturers’ Association (SFMA) was established in 1967, with more than half a century of engagement serving more than 450 members of food manufacturers and those from food-related industries. The food manufacturing industry has built a strong reputation for food quality and safety, with a diversified base of more than 850 food manufacturers producing S$10.6 billion of total output in 2017 with S$6.1 billion being exported to ASEAN countries, Australia, China and the Middle East. Overall, the food manufacturing industry employs more than 48,000 workers and contributed a substantive value-added of S$4.3 billion to Singapore’s GDP in 2017.
This success is made possible with the launch of the Food Manufacturing Industry Transformation Map (ITM) in November 2016 encompassing projects such as the Food Innovation Product Award, Singapore Food Gifts and overseas ‘Tasty Singapore’ tradeshows, supermarket promotions and business missions. These projects helped drive innovation capabilities, productivity improvement and internationalisation to enhance our local food industry’s competitive both edge in local and overseas markets.
The SFMA has fostered a very close collaboration with the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA). The AVA has always been the watchful eye in ensuring food products imported are safe and manufactured into wholesome and safe food for consumption. The AVA has indeed greatly helped our food manufacturers to create sustainable, high-value food products, raising our standards and helped strengthen the food industry by ensuring food safety is in place to be the main driving force for our food industry’s competitiveness.
With the ongoing trade wars and the uncertainty of the huge currency fluctuations, many food manufacturers will face bigger challenges not only on trade competitions alone but also currency exchange volatility and unfair taxes levied on their goods exported on our neighbouring countries. Let us join our hands and strengthen our capabilities to engage these challenges together in our internationalisation journey.
With this directory in place, buyers are readily informed about the food manufacturers and agricultural trades and services available. This will certainly enhance our coverage and outreach and act as a one-stop solution for buyers in their sourcing missions.
We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to the AVA for all the tremendous support and guidance to make the food industries relevant and Marshall Cavendish Business Information Pte Ltd for collating such wonderful concise data in both hard and soft copies.
Thank you all for the job well done!
